Together Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park make up a massive conservation area. The Great Ruaha and Rufiji Rivers course through these magnificent wildlife areas and this is where most of the camps and safari action lies. Selous is a name synonymous with safari and we will unlock the adventure of this area with our wonderful partners here.
The Selous Game Reserve is Africa’s largest wildlife reserve and represents Tanzania’s most extensive conservation area. By size it is largest, just ahead of the Serengeti and Ruaha National Park. In the Selous Game Reserve you will find all the typical African safari animals in good numbers as well as a very impressive diversity of birdlife. There certainly is plenty to be seen here in the Selous. Often not as crowded as the Northern reserve areas, the Selous offers a gorgeous sense of wilderness and the camps we have selected really feed into that remoteness and sense of escape. In our experience, the cooler months certainly do make for the best time to visit. So look to the months from June to October, but do be aware of the very busy peak in August. Heavy rains can render parts of the reserve inaccessible at certain times – this is typically between April and May. The soils soak up the rains and become too muddy to traverse, which can put a real damper on things. That said, there is always something to experience and relish in this amazing part of Africa.
