Northern Ethiopia is mostly visited for the fascinating culture from the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela to incredible histories, both modern and ancient. A prime reason for ascending the heights of the Simien Mountains is the chance to see the Walia Ibex, but here there is so much more to behold from Gelada monkey to Jackals and Foxes and spectacular bird life.
Birdwatching is a “must do” activity in this part of Ethiopia, with many different and some endemic species of bird recorded in the immediate area of the Simien Mountains National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There are also a few leopard in the Simiens but these are very rare. They remain secluded in the wooded valley areas of the north escarpment and occasionally venture onto the plateau to hunt, they do prefer the cover of the trees.
