The Democratic Republic of Congo, in the midst of subsaharan Africa, offers the intrepid safari-goer everything a true African adventure should. You can trek with the gorillas and chimpanzees on hikes into the African jungle or clamber up Nyiragongo to peer spellbound into the world‘s largest active lava lake, bubbling and hissing below. Virunga is Africa’s oldest National Park and home to incredible wildlife and plants. Here one can expect to see everything from Colobus Monkeys, gaudy Turacos and Forest Elephants whilst the mythical Okapi and Congo Peacocks lurk mostly unseen!
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is an enormous expanse of country and offers great diversity of habitat and subsequent experience that really has to be seen to be truly appreciated. The eastern border region around Lake Kivu is the perfect place to put this to the test. Despite years of unrest in the DRC, a safe and enjoyable trip can most definitely be enjoyed here. Trips to the region combine very well with Rwanda and even other East Africa countries, such as Uganda. Combinations with more traditional safari (Kenya and Tanzania) and beach destinations (Zanzibar archipelago) are also easily arranged. The real attraction here in the DRC is the pioneering nature of the trekking and the safari, which gives one a real sense of discovery and adventure. Much of the wildlife in the DRC is endemic to the rift valley region and in many cases quite breathtaking! We highly recommend doing safaris into this part of the world with an experienced professional guide and both Alastair and Gavin thrill at showing this part of Africa to intrepid travelers.

“Our experience with Mammoth Safaris was nothing short of phenomenal. Planning was personal and easy. The guided safari has changed the way we will travel in the future! And the gorillas were amazing too!”
