Zakouma is probably the most important park in north-central Africa from a conservation perspective. It is a vast and hauntingly beautiful landscape that still teems with large herds of game and superb birdlife.
Access is by 2 hour flight in a Cesna Caravan from the capital N’Djamena and realistically this is the only way in! Camp Nomade lives up to its name as the camp is oft uprooted and moved around the reserve to make the most of the changing conditions. Zakouma experiences extensive flooding each year making the flat terrain inaccessible for long periods. As the water recedes the camp is placed in beautiful locations at the most productive wetlands and woodlands. It is a simple camp but extremely well done, and superbly appointed. Crucially too, Camp Nomade is only available in a restricted number of slots each season, so advanced booking is essential.
